The New Jim Crow: Mass Incarceration in the Age of Colorblindness (2010

Civil rights activist Michelle Alexander looked into the history of mass incarceration in the U.S. and traced its roots back to the Jim Crow era. She argues that there has been a “racial caste system” in the U.S., which has created a policing pipeline that disproportionately criminalizes Black people. This book is informative about the prison industrial complex, as well as histories of predatory incarceration and under/un-paid Black labor in the U.S.
