ENG: There are many stories about runaway slaves taking flight in the dead of night through swamps, forests and rivers. This book is about a man, Robert Smalls, who took to the sea. The enslaved man learned how to navigate the Confederate ship on which he had been forced to toil and he used all that he had learned to take up a daring attempt at freeing himself and over a dozen others.
This book not only touches on the history of slavery in America, but it also concisely discusses the civil war – as it relates to slavery and the union of the country. It also offers a harbor map of the Charleston, South Carolina region and many sites that still exist today. The afterward to this short book is a particular treat for adults who will wonder what ever happened to Smalls. This book is a good read for 7-10 year olds who can practice reading aloud and who are also beginning to understand the notions of American history, war, freedom, rights, and enslavement.
