Kesha Fikes uses ethnography to show how EU integration shifted the socio-political interactions of African migrants and Afro-descendant citizens in Portugal. Race is presented as a discourse that runs parallel to post-colonial legacies and transnational migration between Portugal and its former African colonies, particularly Cape Verde. Black domestic labor is investigated as a window into conflicting representations of modernity in Europe and there are conversations about the ways that citizenship goes beyond legality to become social performance.
