This anthology was edited by a Black Cuban writer and a White British academic joined in a mutual appreciation for cultural life and literary traditions of Cuba. A variety of authors, primarily Latinx, discuss and discover the country through a three-part exploration. The first takes on a historical lens, including narratives on African roots and cultural inheritance. The next focuses on religious traditions that harken back to the continent, while syncretically re-imagining Caribbean spiritual realities. Last, is about race relations; it goes beyond Black identity and tackles questions of defining Whiteness and racialized labor in a post-colonial American context. The collection of essays and stories come together beautifully to paint a picture of life as a Black Cuban.
