African Identity in Asia: Cultural Effects of Forced Migration (2009)

This book comes from Luso-Asian and Indian Ocean historian Shihan de Silva Jayasuriya, who tackles issues of forced migration in the Red Sea and Indian Ocean, as well as the persistent importance of Portuguese colonial trade links in the merchant networks between the west coast of the Indian subcontinent and the east coast of Africa. This book highlights the military footprint of first-generation African migrants in Asia, as demonstrated by surviving elements of music and art that continue today. This study presents the conflicting narratives about forced migration, East African slavery, integration, multi-cultural identity, and Afro-Asian intersectionality that are pervasive in histories of the Indian Ocean.
